Updated Rectangle of Fifths printout

I have updated formatting and fixed two errors… this continues to be one of my favorite tools in my personal songwriting. I have no idea how many hours I’ve spent on this thing, but it is worth every bit of energy I’ve put into it. I hope others find it useful someday 🙂

The Rectangle of Fifths

I’ve sometimes struggled to find the right notes or chords to fit my feelings in the right order… trying to keep track of scale degrees, notes and chord progressions can really slow down my creative flow.

Over time, I’ve tried various graphics and charts to visualize musical intervals, but nothing I found on the internet really met my needs as a songwriter… so I lovingly crafted my own visual aid.

Using the chorded scales and all seven modes for twelve keys, I ordered them by fifths and tried to make them easy to reference visually. Major and Minor keys are highlighted and so are all the V chords. I’ve gone through several revisions and am dubbing the result The Rectangle of Fifths, because the Circle of Fifths needed some expansion for my own use as a musician.

It’s also very helpful for transposing not only into other keys, but also other modes!

I hope this chart can be a help to other musicians! I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
